FEIJOA

Feijoa sellowiana

The Negotiator
The tree that trades sweetness for a helping wing.
FOR YOUNG EXPLORERS
Turn a leaf gently: can you find its silvery underside? If there are flowers, stand quietly and watch. Who comes to visit? This tree has a delicious bargain. Birds nibble its sweet, fleshy petals. As they feed, pollen can dust their heads and travel to another flower.
The bird gets a snack. The tree gets help making fruit. Can you think of a kindness that helps two friends at once?
ROOTS & STORIES
Feijoa comes from southern South America. Birds visit its flowers for their fleshy petals. Carried far from home by gardeners, it became a favorite in New Zealand.
Many varieties crop better with pollen from another variety. Their harvest depends on relationships as well as roots. Making room for pollinators helps a garden flourish. In life, too, we grow stronger when what nourishes us also nourishes others.
GIFTS OF THE TREE
A ripe feijoa smells floral and tropical. Its sweet, tangy flesh recalls pineapple, guava and even bubble gum. It contributes vitamin C and fibre. Scoop it fresh, bake it into cakes or make chutney. The fleshy flower petals are sweet too.
LOOK CLOSER
Still green? It may be ripe! Feijoas keep their green skin as they mature. Their scent, gentle softness and readiness to fall tell you more than color.

A Negociadora
Quem vem visitar?Esta árvore propõe uma troca deliciosa. As aves petiscam as pétalas doces e carnudas.
