The Trickster

The shrub that changes colours and crosses boundaries.

FOR YOUNG EXPLORERS

Choose one flower cluster without touching it. How many colours can you see? Watch a butterfly: which tiny flowers does it visit?

This little trickster changes its costume. As flowers grow older, their colours can shift, turning one cluster into a tiny rainbow.

A butterfly sees a place to sip nectar. We see a puzzle to watch. Come back tomorrow: has anything changed? Keep this discovery for your eyes. Lantana is not for tasting!

ROOTS & STORIES

Lantana travelled from the tropical Americas into gardens for its colourful flowers. Birds carry its seeds beyond garden boundaries, where it can form dense thickets and crowd out native plants.

Its story asks us to look beyond a pretty flower. Caring for a garden means noticing who else needs space. In life, too, flourishing together sometimes means knowing where to stop.

GIFTS OF THE PLANT

Butterflies find nectar in its tiny flower tubes. People have long admired its colourful blooms, while its rough leaves release a strong, pungent scent when disturbed. Enjoy watching it without picking or rubbing: leaves can irritate skin, and leaves and berries can be harmful if eaten. Its gift here is a chance to observe.

LOOK CLOSER

One flower, or a whole bouquet? Each colourful head holds many tiny flowers. Look for the separate little tubes, each opening like a miniature trumpet.

A Brincalhona
