The Toolbox

The tree with a different gift on every branch.

FOR YOUNG EXPLORERS

Look closely at a leafy spray. Can you follow its branching pattern? Count the tiny oval leaflets on one small branch. Can you spot a long pod?

This tree carries a surprising toolbox. Its leaves can become a meal, while its seeds hold oil. The long pods look like drumsticks, but belong in a kitchen rather than a band!

After careful pruning, moringa can send out fresh shoots. What could you make with the gifts already around you?

ROOTS & STORIES

From the Indian subcontinent, moringa travelled with people who valued its food and oil. It grows quickly in warmth and can regrow after pruning. Yet even this drought-tolerant tree produces fewer leaves when water is scarce.

Returning leafy prunings to the soil helps nourish future growth. A lasting harvest leaves room for recovery. In our own lives, too, giving and replenishing belong together.

GIFTS OF THE TREE

Cook the leaves as greens or stir dried leaf powder into soup. They contribute calcium, iron and beta-carotene, which the body can turn into vitamin A. Young pods recall asparagus. Fragrant flowers attract visitors, and seed oil appears in skincare and perfumes.

LOOK CLOSER

Look inside a dry, open pod: each seed has three papery wings. The long pod eventually splits open, revealing a row of these little winged parcels.

A Caixa De Ferramentas
