STRAWBERRY TREE
Medronheiro
Arbutus unedo

The Time Traveller
Yesterday’s flowers, tomorrow’s fruit.
FOR YOUNG EXPLORERS
Look for little bell-shaped flowers and round, bumpy fruits. Can you spot different colours? In autumn, flowers and ripe fruit may appear together. This tree keeps two calendars at once. A flower needs about a year to become a ripe red medronho. By then, a new set of flowers may already be opening.
Yesterday’s beginning meets tomorrow’s promise on the same branch. If you visit again in another season, what do you think will have changed?
ROOTS & STORIES
The medronheiro belongs to the landscapes of Portugal and the wider Mediterranean. Its slow-ripening fruit links one autumn to the next, while late flowers offer food to visiting insects. People gather medronhos for preserves and the traditional spirit that carries their name.
Let different seasons coexist. In a garden and in our own lives, ripening rarely follows a single timetable.
GIFTS OF THE TREE
Ripe medronhos have a soft, grainy texture and a gently sweet flavour. They contribute vitamin C and fibre. Portugal turns them into jam and the traditional spirit aguardente de medronho. Taste ripe fruit with your host. Distillation does not preserve its nutritional gifts.
LOOK CLOSER
The strawberry tree is unrelated to garden strawberries. Its name comes from the look of its fruit, rather than a shared family tree.

O Viajante Do Tempo
