The Alchemist

A bitter beginning, a golden gift.

FOR YOUNG EXPLORERS

Watch a branch turn in the breeze. Can you spot the silvery undersides of the leaves? Look for olives, but leave them on the tree.

A fresh olive holds a surprise: it tastes fiercely bitter. Time and careful preparation help turn it into the olive we enjoy at the table.

Other olives become oil. Imagine a little fruit carrying a drop of gold! The Alchemist reminds us that some gifts need a helping hand before they reveal themselves.

ROOTS & STORIES

People around the Mediterranean have tended olive trees for thousands of years. Their fruit has fed families, while olive oil has lit lamps and helped make soap. Silvery leaves and a capacity to endure dry summers suit this patient tree to its home.

Work with a place’s strengths and care for what lasts. In gardens and in life, good things often deepen through attention.

GIFTS OF THE TREE

Olive oil offers mainly monounsaturated fats, with grassy or fruity aromas and a peppery finish. It enriches food and traditional soaps. Curing softens the bitterness of table olives. Taste prepared olives or oil with your host. Fresh olives are intensely bitter.

LOOK CLOSER

Green and black olives can come from the same tree. They mark different stages of ripening, although processing can also change an olive’s colour.

A Alquimista
